Šibenik

Geographical and Historical Position

Šibenik is town in Northern Dalmatia, located at the mouth of the Krka River at the Adriatic Sea. It is the capital of Šibenik-Knin County and the oldest Croatian town on the Adriatic coast, mentioned for the first time in 1066 in a document written by King Petar Krešimir IV and therefore often called "Krešimir’s Town". The official status of a town assigned in the 13th century was also the main reason for the construction of its main symbol, the Cathedral of St. James, a celebrated UNESCO World Heritage Site. Šibenik is also often called "The City of Children", as it has been hosting the renowned International Children's Festival for almost 60 years.
